Dual booting windows 2000 pro and redhat 9

I have 2 hard drives and i have redhat 9 installed on one and windows 2000 pro on the other I have grub installed. when i try to boot windows i get the msg
"Booting windows 2000
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
Chainloader +1
Error 13:Invalid or unsupported executable format
Press any key to continue..."

The only way i can get either OS to run is if i plug either hd as the primary hd. Im new to this so i need step by step instructions

I dont know about step by step, but I do know that you did not install your bootloader to your MBR. Most tutorials skip this vital part. Since I assume windows is on primary master, then the bootloader should have been installed to that hdd. You can use your Rh9 cd and "linux rescue" it and reinstall the bootloader.

1.install win2k in the first harddisk
2.install linux in the second harddisk and in the bootloader installation selec the firstharddisk's MBR

I have the same setup, and didn't face any problems

Step by step:

1) pop in your Red hat Cd1 cd which is bootable. When you get greeted by the welcome screen asking you for input type "linux rescue"
2) At the rescue prompt, you should see a few options, one should be "reinstall bootloader"
3) that is what you want, and if you see anything else you might need, go for it, but just fix the bootloader first.

you should be able to take out the cd and reboot with grub there.

I reinstalled grub and now linux boots up fine but windows dosent boot instead i get this msg.

"Booting "dos"
Rootnoverify (hd1,01)
Chainloader +1"

Then it stays at that screen and nothing else happens.

Did you reinstall with Win2k on Primary Master? It might think it's still there. There is a grub command to trick Windows into thinking it's on a certain disk ('map' or something). Also, you can adjust the Windows C:\boot.ini to reflect where it is. Or you can arrange the drives properly and attempt to reinstall the bootloader again.

This is basically the same problem I'm having but with RH8.0. Is it possible to just put an entry in boot.ini for the RH8.0 distro, and just boot using the windows bootloader?

Yes it is possible, but you'll have to adjust various files in Linux to reflect it's not being on the Primary hd (/etc/grub.conf & /etc/fstab).

Windows Second?

I've got a laptop with RH9 already installed with the default partitioning (except I put the swap next to the boot, for speed), and now I'd like to install Win2K so that I can dual boot. Is this a lot more difficult? Tips/links appreciated.
