Dual boot xp and mandrake 10


Greetings

When I choose linux to boot to, which is almost always , it automatically boots to the GUI and I would rather start X myself.
Could u tell me how to prevent the GUI from loading... Thanks kindly.. I am old man new to linux

you should just have to edit /etc/inittab. There should be a line near the top that says id:X:initdefault:. Change whatever number the X is to 3.

Sorry! I found the line by "cat inittab" and found the line but how do I edit it?

Do I need to start text editor vi? Thanks again...

Vi, or emacs, or nano, or kate, or gedit, or some other text editor (I prefer nano).

You'll have to edit the file as root. So su which should let you become root (and prompt for your password). Generally, as good habit when you're mucking around with config files, the first thing you should type as root is cp inittab inittab.orig or some other name (you're making a backup copy). Then type nano /etc/inittab. Once you've made changes, hit Ctrl-X and it will prompt you to save the file. Hit "Y" and it should save and close. Then reboot and it should all work...
