dual boot mbr grub problems
Hi folks
I have run into a real mess with my dual boot win 2000 and Fedora Core 5. I recently had Dual boot between Windows 2000 and CentOS. I read about FC5 and how it was hyped up to be one of the best linux desktops out right now so I decided to give it a try. I downloaded the dvd.iso from fedora mirror site using bittorrent. Burned it onto a dvd and decided to give it a shot. I luanched the FC5 install repartitioned the drive, started to do the install and BANG! it crapped out on me saying some kind of error report this bug to the community. Well now my windows 2000 is not bootable, because FC5 screwed up my grub from previous installation which was working and now I cant install FC5 for the life of me. And that really got me mad because Im thinking like what the hell. FC5 destroyed my grub and failed an install. So my question is how can I recover my grub or my windows mbr so I can boot into windows normally. I cannot aford to reinstall windows because I have too much data there that I need. Some of it is backed up some of it is not. PLease advice on how to recover my mbr. Thanks |
Grub will be toast - boot your XP CD, get into recovery console, run fixmbr ...
reboot ... |
I dont have XP i only have windows 2000 bootable but how do I get into recovery console? I really just need it to repair the mbr I heard recovery console may overwrite some system files?

Win2k is the same - just hit "r" (as it says) on the way up.
Fixmbr is fine - you might get a message saying it will maybe eat your disk and kill your children but it's never caused a problem I know of. There is always a possibility of something going wrong, but it's exceedingly small in that case. |
excellent it worked... problem is fixed. thanks a million!
