Dual boot issues… Not SuSE, but Grub…

Dual boot issues… Not SuSE, but Grub…

First I want to thank everyone here.
I have written before to this forum and received helpful hints.

However…

After 2 weeks and still no dual boot solution. I have it figured out to me needing to reconfigure GRUB after installing XP and 9.1.

The Motherboard is an ASUS "K8V SE Deluxe" K8T800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU. With Onboard SATA/RAID: VT8237, 2xSATA, RAID 0/1; Promise R20378, 2x SATA, RAID 0/1/0+1

I have disabled the SATA/RAID, but Linux still detects it and this is where the trouble begins.

I will install XP first and it installs perfectly. (Funny, The last 15 systems I built SuSE always installed with no hitch and XP had all the issues. But those were not high end Motherboards)

When installing SuSE, the first thing I notice is that Linux recognizes the primary drive as “ hde’. Notice the letter ‘ e ‘. It sees Windows on hde,1 and wants to make swap hde,2 and root hde,3.

Once it installs and reboots it will hang on loading GRUB, and never load!

I have tried rescuing system, re-installing, messing around with GRUB, I got it to work once, my last time, I was booting back and forth perfectly until I updated SuSE online, then it hangs on loading GRUB stage 2.

In configuring GRUB there are several choices to edit and I am not sure where to point what to.

I could just Install 1 OS on a different HD and make the swap in the BIOS, but I have been dual-booting for 4 years now and never had an issue. My wife and kids use the PC and They are not going to be taught how to go and make BIOS changes.

Is there somebody who understands GRUB and can teach me what is supposed to go where?

Thanks in advance… Michael

we are here to help

1) what version of suse are you on, I know you claim its not a suse issue but humour me?
2) I don't have raid and I believe if you have HARDWARE raid on your mobo, the bios sees 2 drives as ONE and so grub will see the same.
3) I appreciate you have 'disabled' raid but it sounds like you are using a suse generic kernel with support turned on
I don't have suse either, but you can re-compile to turn off or use a kernel append line to disable.
4) silly I know, but do you have a sata?
then you must format it if you are using it for linux with either
fdisk /dev/sda (if first sata) or
cfdisk /dev/sda
or use qtparted and do it as a scsi drive.

the reason I ask is that some satas are seen as E as referred to in your hde comment.
and It appears C drive is on this hde.

5) I agree with you that there may need to be a mobo configuration that may change things but lets make a start with above?
