1) what version of suse are you on, I know you claim its not a suse issue but humour me?
2) I don't have raid and I believe if you have HARDWARE raid on your mobo, the bios sees 2 drives as ONE and so grub will see the same.
3) I appreciate you have 'disabled' raid but it sounds like you are using a suse generic kernel with support turned on
I don't have suse either, but you can re-compile to turn off or use a kernel append line to disable.
4) silly I know, but do you have a sata?
then you must format it if you are using it for linux with either
fdisk /dev/sda (if first sata) or
cfdisk /dev/sda
or use qtparted and do it as a scsi drive.
the reason I ask is that some satas are seen as E as referred to in your hde comment.
and It appears C drive is on this hde.
5) I agree with you that there may need to be a mobo configuration that may change things but lets make a start with above?
