Drive repartitioning tool for dual boot installation

Not sure if this should go here or in a distro specific area (mods, feel free to move the thread if it's more appropriate in the Ubuntu area).

Anyways... I'm looking to install an Ubuntu-based distro on my laptop (Backtrack 5R3, specifically). Right now I have it installed on a 32GB USB stick and have freed up some space on my Win7-64 partition for the install. The question I have though, is whether I need to worry about data loss if I use the Ubuntu installation utility to repartition the drive or should I use another piece of software to do it. In the past, I've used Partition Magic for this kind of thing, but I no longer have a copy (had one with my MacMillan version of Mandrake 6.1 years ago).

Can the Ubuntu installer safely repartition my drive?

gparted on any livecd should do the job.
shrinking partitions should not cause data-loss, however, I'd get backups of the important "stuff".

Traditional advice is to use the MS tools to

1. defrag windows
2. shrink windows

IOW best to use MS tools for MS systems.
Once you've got the empty space, go ahead and partition that with any tool you like.
