Question dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0004

Dear all,

I am a newbie here. I am looking for solution for following problem.
below is the error message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem

when I type dpkg --configure -a on console, it replied dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0004 near line 0: newline in field name 'padding'

Can anyone suggest possible solution?

many thanks
