domain names renewal cost

I have 2 unused (yet) domain names that are due for renewal in December 2011 and I am a bit confused about what to do because the cost of renewal seems to be almost nothing when the registrar with whom I have these domain names is reported as charging $US35 each for a one year subscription.

So my question is: could someone explain or point me to info that would tell me what should be a reasonably-priced but safe option since I am not using those and when I will be ready to do so it will be with one or more machines in co-location.

Thank you for your help.

Never pay more than $10 dollars USD yearly for your domain name. Anything above that, they might as well be bending you over and you know..

Find another registrar to renew these with.

There are domain names

And then there are domain hosting services

A lot of companies combine these into one service fee. However the cheapest for domain hosting services with reasonable specs (e.g. Linux with LAMP) is over $100 per year. It can be cheaper if it's only http hosting with no extras and very limited space.

But yes, as trickykid stated, the fee for just registering the domain name should not be more than $10 per year.

Your choice is to pay someone to renew or let them fall vacant.

Odd named domains have little value on the market. I think the owners of Be.com have been trying to sell it for a decade, I think they finally let it lapse. If it does lapse some companies try to secure them for later sale.

Be sure you understand how to then get them registered dns.
