does anyone know how to retrieve data you forgot to change permissions to?
 

Hi everyone

While installing fedora I forgot to change the file permissions on my home partition, so now I can't access it as I don't have the r/w permissions :cry: *slaps head in simpson like style*

Does anyone know if there is any way of retrieving this data?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate :)

Why not just log in as root and change the permissions?

I tried doing this with damn small linux from disc as I've done this before and using the dsl distro seemed to give me root permissions to do this, though I never actually tried doing that yet

I tried to access the storage media when logged on as root and got a message saying "Permissions Denied" when I tried to mount it

Root got a permission denied message? That doesn't sound right. What filesystem are you using for this partition? Maybe it would help if you posted the commands you're running and the output.

If my memory serves me correctly then I was using ext3. The file system I'm using on the main partition I'm trying to access it from uses ext2... could this really be the cause?

BTW I was using the kde konqueror GUI and right clicked on the partition I was attempting to access (hda6) by right clicking and selecting "Mount" which resulted in the error message "Permissions Denied".

I don't think it would be a problem with the application because I tried dong the same thing with the Gnome file browser which had the same result.

The shell is always an option and I could attempt the chmod command to see what happens... still I appreciate any advice

Are you trying to work through NFS. Depending on your configuration, root via NFS becomes nobody with no admin capability. To change permissions, work from the machine the partition is physically mounted on.

If this is not your case, sorry. I guess you are back to square one.

While installing fedora I forgot to set this mount point I'm trying to access as my home directory, though that's what happens when you're tired I suppose.

If I can't do it by adjusting some settings, then all I can think of is to reinstall then select that mount point as my home partition... well I guess once a :newbie: always a :newbie:

Ok well thanks for your help anyway and I'll post another comment soon to let you know how I get on :)

Stick a live CD in the CD drive, boot, then mount the affected drive and fix whatever has to be fixed; permissions, mountpoints, passwords, or whatever else. No need to reinstall.

getting write permissions is a problem when using the mount point mentioned as a home directory but got the problem sorted now :D
