The more I use Linux, the more I prefer the terminal, and the more simple/standalone GUI apps.

i got burned out on dos , and have not learned LINUX terminal ..
linux was 10 years after my burnout , [ boy i wish it had been available in 82 !
i would have learned it and used it !

Now i wish their was a safe GUI disk partition-er that was easy to use ! Ask me how many partitions i want and sizes for all that would do the math on the fly for all as you changed each one ![and would not bork windows and other OS on system already ]
[ i will do it if your windows is already borked , hay u wanted it to run , your win system is still c: drive , bring in the disk or pay for a new one - to be loaded , till then - THIS LINUX WORKS on d:.. UR KOMP IS FINE ! }

also this week will be adding another ubuntu to this buildings growing linux community , When a win system crashes , they are willing to let me add Ubuntu LTS to the hard drive , lol , 1 @ a time we are growing !

For desktop things, I don't use the terminal at all. I can adjust the volume, log in/out/restart with GUI buttons, and scroll through my apps and do all the usual things. When I started playing with Linux I really liked being able to build my own DE, but these days I'm finding a lot of value in more opinionated setups (Gnome Shell) because they get close enough.

Unfortunately there's not a button for everything, so I end up using the terminal quite a bit, too.

Cool

Its mostly the GUI, but am progressively getting used to the terminal, as I continue with my learning. Will be good soon.

While I pretty much always use a UI desktop, it depends. I read email and browse using windows. I do open a terminal from within the desktop and then use emacs, but I consider those to be more command line. Similarly I'll do GDB from the command line and type a lot of commands. Just turns out that the terminals are within my desktop.

As far as a pure command line, I only encounter that with the limited, embedded systems I work with and until I configure them well enough, the command line, but usually I need them to be network enabled, so I eventually ssh over to them and work through my desktop workstation.

not a great question. I use the terminal a lot for programing and some of the configuration if there is nothing suitable graphically.
I would not use a text browser but have ocationally. I like the midnight commander if I'm doing a lot of file work but find EmelFM simple for small file work. I use a text editor for most configuration but use Geany for most other things. Of course I use the Gimp a lot, only xpm files could be done from a terminal.

I prefer to use the GUI and use it exclusively. The only time I use the terminal is if the Terminal is when it can't be done with the GUI. The only times I had to use the Terminal was in the first week using Linux when there was a problem with the OS which was because I was learning using openSUSE 13.2 first with KDE then I switched to Xfce. I haven't used the Terminal since. Being that I came from using Windows exclusively 2 months ago and now I use openSUSE 13.2 Xfce I found I have no need for Windows anymore. The biggest thing for me not switching to Linux earlier is there is always talk and videos that made it look like you need to the use the Terminal in order to run Linux which is not the case. The other reason is I tried different Linux distro back in 2000 and none of them I could get the sound to work and could never get dial up networking to work because of lack of drivers. Thankfully that has all changed.

I posted my work in desktop response in the first question in my LQ email. i get the email with questions and put this answer to that hyper-link.
I am still more comfortable with the GUI. i do prefer the command line in many cases though. problem is my unfamiliarity still. I am learning but get stuck, my typing is only 'ok' so can make mistakes-i try not to blindly copy/paste because of a couple/few unintended secondary consequences i ran into. nothing terrible, however, let me know how easy a catastrophic problem could happen that way.
i try to use cli if i can. however, the GUI managers are still my fall back positions

A system admin myself I use a muxed terminal, to eg. configure, debug or launch... GUI apps over ssh, ha!
PS mpv or mplayer are quite good playing videos without X. Just choose the 'caca' video output, eg: mpv -vo <vidéo file or url>.

Exclamation

For most of my "terminal" work I use Yakuake which blurs the line between 'GUI' and 'terminal'. Some things are clumsy in a GUI app, some things are clumsy in the terminal; pick the best for the task at hand. It's worth knowing shell commands and scripting but it's equally rewarding to have a thorough understanding of a program like Konqueror.

For me also the answer is both. Though I tend to start graphical tools such as editors from the command line rather than from a file browser.
