Teh Mighty Question pt.1!!!

Do you have real boxed version of any game made for Linux (Unreal3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Civilization etc)???

If, define what.
I don't have, just curious to see is it profitable to turn games to Linux to box and then sell them.

JaseP 06-28-2002 06:40 PM

Boxed games for Linux that I own:

Quake 3 Arena (Linux version from Loki, complete with metal tin box)
SimCity 3000 Unlimited (from Loki)
Terminus (with PC Win/Linux, and MAC executables in one retail package, I only run it in Linux)

I would buy others, infact I would buy another copy of Jedi Knight II if it was ported and it was the only way I could get a Linux executable.

I'm currently looking for a copy of FreeSpace 2 because a Linux port just came out.

I think it is currently more profitable for companies to (a) release source code of their games and (b) release games that have as many cross-platform libraries as possible to avoid giving away the farm when they do release source code, or alternatively, allow independant, amateur developers to have access to the source code provided they sign non-disclosure and rights limiting agreements with the developers.

Now, Transgaming, in conjunction with another developer, has worked on and released a set of programming tools that will permit faster cross-platform game development. That will permit faster ability to develop a game that can be ported to multiple envirnments within the same release schedule without addding significant additional costs. You could easily release a single boxed copy of a game for Win PC, PC Linux, and MAC within the same schdeule for development. In addition, you could develop the same title for Playstation 2, and other platforms in very little time as well.

By the way, are the games ported by Loki true Linux ELF/A.OUT binaries, or just WINE hacks (like Borland Kylix)?

Aussie 06-28-2002 11:21 PM

Loki did true ports, anything that uses the quake 3 engine can be easily ported, as RTCW has been.

zLinuxz 06-28-2002 11:29 PM

I still can't make my demo Quake3 run with my video card, so I aint getting the box, hehe.

kwigibo 06-29-2002 02:29 AM

xbill rocks, but in all seriousness, I downloaded the quake 2 source code to compile it, but it's missing a damn file apparently, at least according to the make file. Damn it!

NSKL 06-29-2002 05:55 AM

I got Rune, SOF and UT from TuxGames, and Heroes of might & magic 2 from Loki, they all work very good.... even faster than in windows!

I'm maybe going to get Neverwinter Nights from tuxgames just to try out true gaming experience on Linux... :)
Though my economical situation is quite shitty at the moment :(
Linux is cool, games are cooler. That's exactly why I dualboot now!

tundra 06-29-2002 01:21 PM

neverwinter nights has been ported to linux??? hmm..... *sound of mind whirring*

tundra 06-29-2002 01:26 PM

oh yea... has anyone any idea why blizzard doesn't port its titles? man, i would love warcraft 3 on linux... :D

Half_Elf 06-29-2002 03:17 PM

I have civilisation... and that's all...

If anyone want to share some "win to linux" package, I will greatly appreciate!!! I have (win) Quake3 running too, with a little patch but I cannot play on the internet, I think the win version does not support linux network.

If you have any linux games/win-to-linux patch you want to share, tell me :)

Goatdemon 06-29-2002 11:58 PM

accedently posted twice and this was the crappier version so i deleted the contents... Sorry

Goatdemon 06-30-2002 12:02 AM

i've ordered heretic 2 from amazon, it'll be my first real linux game and only $14.97 with shipping... hasn't gotten here yet but i still said yes to the poll:D .
Next on my list are Sim city and probably rune. I wish amazon was still selling some of the better ported games like SOF and quake... they sold'em so cheap, anywhere else they're approaching expensive. I'm not keen on paying $40 plus on a linux game that doesn't have to pay slick Willie (bill himself) licensing fees.... did you know that guy makes two MILLION!! PER HOUR!!... even when he's asleep... even when he's on the shitter... crazy... that's a fact straight outa' my economics class (no not Compton).

Anyway if anyone is looking to port a game to linux pick a good one like Warcraft3; loki has ported many crappy games in my opinion, like heroes 3, myth 2, and that solitaire game. Also, on the loki site it says that Deus Ex is "coming soon", i was under the impression that loki is out of business, if they're doing one last game they should pick something more recent. I've already played and am now bored of Deus Ex.

* Finally $29.99 is my personal maximum price on linux games.

I would have Quake 3 and Tribes 2, however, hardware acceleration doesn't want to work with my SuSe8, so i'm still sticking to Win$. But I would welcome a switch of course :)

tundra 07-01-2002 06:49 AM

it seems that most ported games are FPS. is the RTS genre (or other genres for that matter) such a pain to play?

crashmeister 07-01-2002 07:13 AM

I am not much of a gamer. Only got my 3D acceleration working because Suse said it wouldn't work. But I was surprised how easy it was to setup games (have Quake2 and others in there).

Lloyd 07-01-2002 08:28 AM

I'm addicted to TuxRacer... although, it only seems to work when I run it in root! :(
I have a few other games, but I haven't played any yet, as I'm in a war against Windows (want internet, can't get modem working). I got a CD full of games from cheeplinux.com - great CD!

Red Guy 07-15-2002 11:26 PM

I use only the xmame emulator with already of 1000 roms and all NeoGeo roms :P

tundra 07-16-2002 03:14 AM

sounds like heaven red

redgore 07-16-2002 03:18 AM

I have no proper boxed games for linux. I have UT installed by using its linux installer. I have "the best of infogrames" version that doesnt install maps properly and found it a real pain to find the script to get these sorted!

tundra 07-16-2002 07:33 AM

i don't have boxed games for linux but i used to play Cannon Smash... was quite fun for a bit...

progster 07-16-2002 07:59 AM

tribes 2 :D

Hiya
I'm not certain that I understood you correctly so let me start there. Are you running Quake 3 in Linux with some version of Wine or Wine libraries ( ie Cedega, Xover, WineX, etc ) ? If so, d00d, go get the loki quake 3 installer. It runs native and it r0x. No problems with networking of any kind, in fact no problems of any kind especially with either the ( easy ) nVidia cards or ( somewhat harder ) AtI cards. You can still directly edit the "config.cfg" file for ultra tweaks and all the setup options work perfectly. The online gaming definitely benefits from the substantially superior networking stacks of Linux, so do not hesitate even if you're on dialup and it takes all day to download. Transgaming is worth the money for most peeps, but why use it when you don't have to? KeepItStupidSimple!

LauroMoura 11-17-2004 02:36 PM

I don't have boxed games (yet). In windows my video card (Savage4) had only Direct3D support and I'm still new to linux. But also I don't have too much time for playing.... ....except for some nethack sessions.... :D

i played NWN on my laptop both in XP pro, and RH9. the performance was about the same, but the graphics were way better under XP due to having an ATI vid card in my laptop. i have not tried it on a system with a Nvidia card to get the full effect and power of the card.

FYI i just used the default drivers from RH and did not compile any drivers. this will also lead to some of the lower graphics compaired to XP as i had the most current drivers from panasonic for XP.

---------------

most of the games i play are MMORPGs so im stuck keeping at least 1 M$ system (i use XP Pro) so i can play my games, but the first MMORPG that releases a native *nix game ill pick it up in a heartbeat. i would so much prefer to never log into an other windows system again but if i want to play games, and i love my games, then that is currently were im stuck.

rusty_slacker 11-17-2004 04:55 PM

i only have quake II, but there are so many i would by, eg Jedi Outcast (BEST GAME EVER), X-wing, Star Wars-Battlefront, Tiger Woods PGA tour, High Heat Baseball, and other stuff like that

H2O-linux 11-20-2004 08:25 AM

I have set up a UT2004 server and installed the actuall game. Unfortunately with both Nvidia and ATI current cards the game play is slower than windows under full 3D acceleration. The UT2004 server is very fast however aftermarket maps may crash the server, some will some will not.
