do ISO mirrors commonly misstate the size of ISOs?
 

I've come across an annoying problem the last two times I downloaded an antiX ISO; I'm not sure the problem is specific to antiX and don't see how it could be the distro's fault. But the mirror sites I went to (I don't remember the first one, but this time it's Sourceforge) inaccurately report the size of the ISO. The first time I was looking for antiX 12 and the second time I went for antiX 13, but both times the site claimed the ISO was slightly over 700 MB when (as I figured out eventually) both antiXes were actually around 675 MB. Since I wanted the ISO to fit on one CD, this led me to mistakenly think I couldn't use it; fortunately, this second time I guessed the error and downloaded it anyway. Is it a common mistake for ISO mirrors to misstate an ISO's size? I never noticed it until now.

This seems to be a problem with Sourceforge, I would think. If you click on the second link in the Mirrors/Downloads section of the antiX website the mirror shows 674MB for the 32 bit version and 672MB for the 64 bit version. The third mirror does not provide the sizes for the images, but if you click on the download links the Firefox download dialog reports the same sizes as the second mirror.

I think this is problem with messing mebibytes (MiB) and megabytes (MB). First is "computer world" unit and second is SI unit. SF show sizes in SI megabytes (1000*1000 B) and correctly name it MB, and your browser or file manager show in mebibytes MiB (1024*1024 B), but incorrectly adding MB as unit. And 674 MiB is equal 706 MB.

Yes, but by displaying that the size was just over 700 MB, the page initially fooled me into thinking it was pointless to click on the download link if I wanted an ISO that fits on one CD. It was only this time that I wised up.

About fitting on CD, I do not recorded anything recently, but I remember that on one standard CD you could write something about 720 MiB with overburning feature.

I'd run md5 or shal on it to see what you did download.

There are a few types of optical disks that are called CD's and they have different sizes. As noted above, some drives can use a trick to put a bit more on a disk than the maker publishes.

Just to reassure Newbiesforever, antiX-full will always fit on a cd. This will not change.
