distro for amd64

Looking for a distro that supports amd64 (x86_64) and also that supports on-board bios raid (VIA VT8237 or promise fasttrack 20378) and texas instrument chip based wifi pci card.
Thanks.

some x86-64 distros you might wanna look at are suse, mandriva, fedora, and ubuntu...

as for your hardware, check hardware compatibility lists, such as the one here at LQ:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php

you can also find compatibility lists at the distributor's websites, with info related specifically to the pre-compiled kernels they provide in their distro...

BTW, make sure you search LQ because I'M SURE other people have asked questions about these chipsets before:

http://www.google.com/search?&q=VT82...xquestions.org

http://www.google.com/search?&q=prom...xquestions.org

just my :twocents:...

i've already check the hcl, and found nothing to solve my problems.
btw, i'll do an extensive search about my problems (i'm used to use the forums' search, but maybe i can check it again...)
well, after spending a lot of hours trying at least 15 distros, the only one that do the job is freeBSD 6-CURRENT... but it has some problems (it is no final yet), so i'll put gentoo on it (i like gentoo, but i feel lazy about spending 12h to do a correct installation...)...
if someone knows any other distro (DEB based would be great!), please let me know...
thanks anyway

debian64 pure is fine, tried it as stable branch and as sid. running as sata and as ata. but-there is issue with SATA disk ioctl queries with kernels >2.6.11.8 -current. People have trouble with some sil and other sata controllers. (not stabile, file corruptions and etc). so ata is recommended. (mandrake64 have same problem on same drives and sata controllers.)
you have to configure apt sources by hand.
everything works fine, besides no xorg and openoffice needs chrooted environment. also no macromedia flash-player for 64bit.

on mandrake all works out of box, but you need java-blackdown for example, you have oo1.4 and it is ok. (i don't love rpm-s)

Slamd64 is buggy. segfaults at installation and later. Not in all machines, but often enough to exclude it from recommendations till those issues are resolved.

they say, best are freebsd, gentoo and kanotix...
did'nt try em.i don't want to compile whole system every time.

FCore installs and works, but core is as stable as sid is, also rpm based.

After all those experiments i have done...man, i don't know any perfect one.
and i am writing this ...considering switch to 32bit something. slack or debian possibly, for further waiting.
64 bits performance is grate, but i want (what a stupid man) latest kde, xorg, and openoffice...
there is no such distro-out of box having em all.
so be prepared for lot of work and reinstalls.

dont use ubuntu 64, it is broken.

Nathanael 06-29-2005 11:26 AM

stick with gentoo

if you have an amd 64 just stick with gentoo - it will not take as long as you expect it to!
a friend of mine has an amd 64 and he compiled gnome within 1hour. that does not sound tooo bad does it now! compared to the 23 hours it took on my celeron 650 :-)

How is it broken??? I have heard of lots of people using AMD64 as well as PPC Ubuntu just fine.

Just saying it is broken doesn't exactly help. Is it a piece of hardware you have that isn't working??? Anything more than it is broken.

The reason I ask is that Ubuntu AMD64 might work just fine for him because he doesn't have your hardware, etc.

Imagine driving into an automobile shop and saying my car is broken but not giving a single problem you are experiencing. Other than getting charged a crapload for them to find the symptoms and problems, you aren't going to get very far. :p

Sorry, Opera double posted for some reason. It almost triple posted too, but LinuxQuestions wouldn't let it./

I have Suse64 installed on an Asus K8V SE with 1 gig memory. I do not like Suse in any shape or form so I have not actually worked with it. Just did some of that weird Yast stuff - which seems to work ok but then I am used to Debian where I do not have to depend on some German administator to help me (in de most of the time).
I am going to load a dual Suse64 and Debian64 if I can figure out how to download the debian64.iso to a Suse system DVD. If anyone else does another debian64 install lets trade notes (I read the previously posted install, and it sounds good to go for me :).

Thanks.

I'm having great luck with Fedora Core 4 AMD_64. I haven't tried RAID though

I've noticed a speed increase from FC3 x86 to FC3 AMD_64, so I suspect the same is true for FC4.

FC4 definitely gets a "thumbs up" from me.

Kanotix 64.

ebsbel 09-21-2005 07:17 AM

Vidalinux is a stage 3 gentoo with an easy gnome interface. Is gawt a Anaconda installer from FC4 and it was really easy and took me less than 1 hour to install. It hasn't got openoffice in the free version, but it can be downloaded. I installed the bin version. It was much faster. My favorite 64 bit linux used to be Kanotix64, but now I always use Vidalinux.
