display resolution

When you boot up debian linux(Kanotix in this case), what
file initially sets your monitor's screen resolution? When i finally
get to my desktop i only have 640x480 available where you
change these settings. I'm locked in at 640X480 which i hate.

Are you referring to the console framebuffer, or X?

As far as I know, knotix uses Xorg 6.8, so you'll want to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the proper modelines for a higher resolution.

Kanotix 2005-3 uses XFree86 4.3

This problem which i posted about is occuring on someone else's computer. Kanotix on my
computer works fine and i can set any display resolution i want. So what i am going to try is copy my
XF86.config file and compare it to the one in the other computer. I can't do that till monday.
