Disk usage problem

I have a difference between what the disk Usage Analyzer reports for the root directory (3.5Gb) and what the System Monitor /File Systems reports (13.8Gb).

I have my home directory mounted on a separate patition /home (7.8Gb).

Any suggestions, not sure where to look

Try the console command du, or even better try the KDE package filelight to get an overview of disk usage

Are you looking at total space, space used, space available? It seems like a huge gap, so maybe one of the apps has one of those items mixed up. What does the console 'df' show?

thanks for the suggestions.

Here's what the df command output on my file system

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb1 26G 14G 11G 57% /
/dev/sdb6 45G 7.9G 37G 18% /home
/dev/sda1 91G 7.6G 83G 9% /mnt/win_c
/dev/sda8 9.4G 959M 8.4G 11% /mnt/win_f
/dev/sda7 133G 69M 133G 1% /mnt/windows
none 502M 8.0K 502M 1% /tmp

I've had a closer look at the volume sizes, it looks like the amount of used space calculated in the / directory includes the space allocated in the windows directories i.e including the calculated space within the/mnt directory?

Is that something to do with the way the windows directories are mounted? It would explain the differences between what's actually stored under the root directory.
