Disk label strangeness?

Hi

I recently got a new HD and set about installing it and partitioning it using GNU parted. Only prob was certain disk labels (all except "msdos") seemed to have limitations - can't set boot flag, can't set swap flag etc...

So whats with the "msdos" disk lable in the first place, and why is it the only one that supports both boot and swap partitions? I would have guessed there would be a "linux" label, but no - i had to set msdos. Is this a motherboard thing where the initial bootloader only looks for certain labels on the MBR?

I cannot see this as a Mobo thing (cuz you posted no info) and besides that the MBR != PT (partition table), the PT comes after the MBR. If GNU Parted refuses to do some things theres two reasons I can imagine why it doesnt: I. missing functionality II. refusing to do stuff thats bad for the hd layout. Beats me which one GNU parted defaults to...

Since you just bought the drive it shouldnt have anything on it, including "lables". If the drive did contain something I would suggest deleting all partitions(im assuming this is what you mean when you say label).
