Discussion: The Linux Filesystem

I thought I'd start a new "series" here at LinuxQuestions. I'll start a topic that effects most Linux users and see what kind of discussion we can come up with.

So here it is, the first. Lets talk about the Linux Filesystem. Where should applications be installed? What is the significance of each dir in the root? Were you overwhelmed when you first began to understand the filesystem? Discuss.

well... i still don't know what /opt is for... and i don't know what the practical use of /usr/local is compared to just /usr.
