"disappearing" files....

Hi all

I have this strange problem, well it is strange to me anyway. I have a linux server where I store all the files I want to be available from anywhere on my little network. These are stored in my home dir. Under home there are 2 sub dirs. Now originally the files in the sub dir's were owned by root but were still "visible" from SMB clients or Thunderbird. Oh, these files are the data files for Thunderbird and TB could write to them, no problems. Anyway, I could not compact them from within TB since I went to a full Linux network and used TB under linux. So I changed the owner/group to me (chown -R brucen.brucen *) and that's when things went haywire. Now nobody but root can see them. Any SMB clients and TB now cannot see anything, just like they don't exist at all. Even changing ownership back to root didn't help. I think I have made a real mess of things and now don't know how to fix it.

So, what have I done wrong and how can I fix it? Any help would be really appreciated as I would like to see my mail from TB on my client box again.

Thanks in advance

Cheers
Bruce

Any reason why you are putting all the files you want to share in YOUR home directory? The purpose of a home directory is that only that specific user can view the contents of the directory.

I would suggest creating another directory to put all your sharable files in. I use /export/samba/files. Everything in there is owned by the user 'nobody'. You are sharing these files via samba right?

By share I meant that these files are available to me, no matter which machine I use. Think of it like My Documents on Windows except they are on a server instead of the local machine. My server has been around for 2 years and my desktops have been through Win 2K, Win XP, Redhat, Mandrake and finally Suse - and my files have been avaiable all along.

However, this is the first time that I have screwed aroudn with them and stuffed things up so I can't see them.

Anyone else got any ideas how to fix my problem?

Fixed it!

Read up on chmod (http://catcode.com/teachmod/) and saw that I did not have execute permission on the dir's, which the experienced will know that x on a dir gives permission to search that dir. So I did chmod -R 766 * on the contents of the my home/ dir and bingo! All the files "came back".

Happily enjoying Thunderbird again! :)
