Directory contents in /

I am to Linux and want to know,
What is the significance of :-
/bin
/boot
/dev
/etc
/home
/initrd
/lib
/lost+found
/media
/misc
/mnt
/opt
/proc
/root
/sbin
/selinux
/srv
/sys
/tftpboot
/tmp
/usr
/var

If not all then atleast a few important once that I can understand what does each directory contain and how do we remember them on whatever we will be finding for can be easily found.
Thanks
