Difficult time getting online.

I have submitted a similar thread, but I now have more information. I am using SuSE linux 7.1 on a P3 600 Mhz computer. Whenever I try to dialup to my ISP and I have ipchains compiled in the kernel it takes 4:11 seconds before I can actually do anything, even when the firewall is deactivated. Two more problems are that I have to restart my computer after I connect if I want to connect again, and I can only connect using root. The error it gives me is "The ppp daemon died unexpectedly." When I don't compile the Ipchains I can get online ( obviously without a firewall) but the other two problems remain, that is I can only get online using root and i have to restart to get online again. Kinternet doesn't work, it just turns the modem on and off repeatedly. I think this makes me think its the timing with the modem, and the timing gets off worse whenever I connect and disconnect. Wvdial does the same. Please help!

P.S. Totally off the subject... Please pray for America during this time of crisis!

The first thing I would check is if the hardware doesnt have conflicting IRQ/DMA/IO addresses.
Then check if the pppd version matches that of the kernels requirements.
Then check if the pppd/network configs are correct.
Then check if you can get it up with issuing "ifconfig ppp0 up".
For each stage review your dmesg, /var/log/messages and the pppd logfiles.

Posting errors and configs can give ppl a better view on whats happening/missing.

I don't know how to do most of that stuff... um more info, or a how to would help. I think I have conflicting IRQs ( in fact I know I do for 2 things) I just don't know for what cards. And if I did know I wouldn't know how to change it.
