You should ask what does Solaris and Linux have in common.

Solaris is a version of UNIX--distributed by Sun. I believe it is still at least partially proprietary code.
Linux is an open-source clone of UNIX--The purists say "GNU Linux" to convey that it it the combo of the Linux kernel and the GNU utilities that give you the complete (open source) OS.

Why do you ask?

Solaris proper includes some proprietary software, but there are distributions of OpenSolaris that are totally free. And the codebase for Solaris is OpenSolaris, which is open source.
Some distributions of Linux include proprietary software as well.

Yes, this is being working on: http://uadmin.blogspot.com/2006/03/w...s-so-slow.html

Also, there is a way to install similarily configured machines way faster, using webstart flash:

It would be good if they can fix the problem and make it a lot quicker to install. The OS itself with the java 3 desktop is a great looking and rock solid. If you can get past the speed issue it's certainly a contender for the desktop market.
