Okay folks...


I would like to know if there are any diagnostic tools available for
hardware troubleshooting? Maybe some that are built-in Linux
(running Mandrake 9.0) or some that may be available from the web.

The Reason: I have a Plextor CDRW, which I love and have been
running for some time with all Mandrake distros...but lately it won't
read a CD, NOR will it burn one correctly. It makes a clicking sound...
to me it sounds like it's try to spin the CD and the cd gets push some how
in a incorrect way and (the clicking) is the CD not being grabbed right.

Did that make any sense? -- So I thought if I could find a diagnostic tool
of some kind, that possibly I could get some idea on how to fix this drive.

Any ideas...

It sounds to me like it may just need a good clean.

I agree with david_ross try cleaning your cdrom/drive...
