What you do is you look on the calendar and do a little subtraction... but presumably you still need to know what date Ubuntu was first installed?

This is trickier than it sounds, due to updates.
If you first installed Warty, then it's record is probably gone with updates. But if you only care about time elapsed since the installer was last run...

IF you havi Ubuntu 7.10 then the earliest it could have been installed is 1st October 2007 ... without actually looking up the release date.

Looking in /var/logs/installer/syslog will provide additional clues perhaps?

I just need to know the date I installed Ubuntu on my system. I wouldn't ask, if I knew or remembered

Reviewing of logs didn't help... It seems they are purged every month so I have logs for March only.

I installed a fresh (no upgrade from previous distros) copy of 7.10 in January I think.

The logs in /var/logs/installer/syslog too?
My main logs are pretty much monthly, too, with six archived ones. But the installer logs have hung about:
Code:
ll /var/log/installer
-rw------- 1 root root 27423 2007-10-25 22:29 casper.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 293659 2007-10-25 22:58 initial-status.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 639839 2007-10-25 22:36 partman
-rw------- 1 syslog adm 137835 2007-10-25 22:58 syslog
-rw------- 1 root root 15 2007-10-25 22:31 version
Files haven't been altered since October 25, 2007...

Code:
me@pc:~$ ls -l /var/log/installer
total 1128
-rw------- 1 root root 29245 2008-01-05 00:57 casper.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 293659 2008-01-05 01:23 initial-status.gz
-rw------- 1 root root 610516 2008-01-05 01:08 partman
-rw------- 1 syslog adm 192987 2008-01-05 01:23 syslog
-rw------- 1 root root 15 2008-01-04 22:59 version
Got it. Thanks

Remembering my first install...

We met at nine. /We met at eight.
I was on time. /No, you were late.
Ah yes! I remember it well.

An Installfest at a LUG. /Your teen-bedroom compost-pile.
As smooth as silk. /A kernel recompile.
Ah yes! I remember it well.

That dazzling-gentoo 3D desktop! /It hadn't been invented yet,
And it was a redhat server.

That's right! That's right!
It warms my heart to know that
you remember still the way you do.
Ah yes! I remember it well.
