Detecting no noise with arecord

Hi,

I would be interesting to know when there is no noise (no one) into a room using arecord.

(Motion would be easier with a webcam, but the pc has no webcam, just an usb mic)

Is it possible to check the level of noise in a room and say whether or not someone is taking ?

I would be interested by bash/sh script (so consequently no x11 at all, since it is for cron job)

Any ideas/inputs would be greatly welcome.
Thanks
