Deleting GNOME.. the consequences
 

Are the libraries that allow KDE to use GNOME apps linked to GNOME desktops itself?

The reason I ask is because if i deleted GNOME from my system because I only use KDE, then would it take those libs, and if so, is there a way to prevent it from doing so?

Deleting things such as GNOME should be a 'last' resort to streamlining IMO. Don't forgot that in a way they work together so i'd be best if you just leave GNOME on there. Or at least keep all the libs and developer files if you absolutly run out of HDD space.

I tried something like what you did and deleted GNOME on an old Mandrake 8.1 install and i was not a happy camper so be careful.

Actually I have GNOME completely wiped out on my system. The comment above is not actually true. I spend a lot of hours so far finding out what is exactly used for what, when, where and why for GNOME. I am like you, in wanting to streamline my system by removing all the junk that was taking up space and overhead in the system. Basically, if you still want to run GNOME applications, which there are serveral I find that I like to run, you need to keep the GNOME libraries installed, and that's pretty much it. The only GNOME package I currently have installed is 'gnome-libs-1.2.13-16' , and I am able to run any GNOME app under my current environment, which is WindowMaker.

well, it depnds what libraries you're talknig abuot. presumably you just meant gtk (the GUI libraries), in which case you can easily install them separately from gnome. god know why you wouldn't want gnome tho... unelss your box isn't fast enough for it. weird kde people...
