No need. Only FAT* and NTFS need to be defragged. If you *really* want to defrag, go to www.freshmeat.net and search for 'defrag', there is only one and it should work, but I would suggest not doing it. I have had my system for 5 years and have not once defragged, with my fragmentation at '0.09%'.
I use ext2 and ext3, but when I set up my new server (soon hopefully) I will use reiserfs. It is supposed to be faster and more reliable, not that ext2 or ext3 have not been reliable.
I haven't found that Reiser is default for any new distro that I have tried. I've had to turn it on myself (the default seems to have been Ext3). But, I have been choosing ReiserFS as my filesystem since I installed Debian Woody, the day it was released (couldn't get Potato to work, so I wiped and reistalled). That was then. Mandrake 9.1 had Ext3, Vector 4 had Ext2, Mepis wanted to choose Ext3, Conectiva chose Ext3 as well but had the 2.6 kernel out of the box. Yoper chose Ext3.
I'll tell you why i choose a journalized filesystem:1) errors - fewer chances of errors in my house. I have 2 small children and they may do anything to my puter. I also live in a rural area where the power fluctuates and goes out unpredictably. I don't have a UPS. I lost my filesystem due to power outages while running Ext2 (actually, I have had to reinstall WinXP because of that too.) ReiserFS got me through the same rough treatment.
2) Speed - I have found that my computer is vastly more responsive compared to Ext2 and somewhat more snappy than when I had Ext3 installed.
