defragment for Linux


Hi can someone explain me why the linux systems dont need defragment? That means that files in linux never get fragmented? If this statement is correct then we can change the partitions in a linux system without harming the whole system.

Because filesystems inherently don't need to be defragged. It's only the ugly hacks in FAT that made it necessary for Windows machines. Read this article for the full technical details. . .
