How to change the default window manager? (specifically from GNOME to KDE)

in redhat you can use switchdesk, or edit the file $HOME/.Xclients-default and enter kde.

i think suse has $HOME/.xinitrc - which specifys which WM should be start up.

no!! don't do it!! you're not THAT dull are you??

use switchdesk, or change it in [g/k/x]dm

you should also be able to edit erm... ~/.Xdefaults to suit your needs
