Dealing with partitions.
 

I use Slackware Linux nowdays, but I am trying to move to Linux From Scratch, but I am having a little problem with my ext3 partition, I need to:

- resize the ext3 partition (and I cannot do this from the installed Linux, because the partition is mounted);
- create the new partition and format it on Reiser4
- install Linux From Scratch;
- copy the contents of my home dir from the old partition to the new one;
- remove the old partition;
- resize the Reiser4 partition to fill the space freed.

I have little experience on disk partitions and filesystems and I don't know where to begin. If you have any idea on how to do this and what programs to use, please tell me.

An easy way to do this is to use a Live CD such as knoppix, and use the partitioning tools such as qtparted or cfdisk to make and/or resize partitions.

Yeah, do what what titanium_geek said, should work fine. Just a non-flaming question: Why are you installing LFS if you don't even know how to get your partitions right?
No Flames please, just a simple question.

Depending on the size of your /home directory, it might also make sense to just backup your files to CD(s) or DVD(s), get rid of all your partitions, and start with a clean slate. Note that you cannot resize a partition to be smaller than the amount of data stored in it, and therefore any resizing actions can involve a bit of juggling - personally, if you can avoid all this, I'd say it would be worth doing. I will do the last suggestion, I will backup my files and then erase evething. I have an old HD with an Linux intalation (and I just remembered of it) from where I can build LFS.
I found out that there is no resize.reiser4 program on reiser4progs tarball, thus, reiser4 cannot be resized.

About the non-flaming question: one day I would need to learn...
