"dd" to image a digital camera

I've Googled this until my head hurts and I can't find the answer. Here is my problem.

1) An old digital camera that has images stored on internal media. There is no removable card.

2) The interface from the camera to a PC is via the serial port, not USB. There is proprietary Windows software that allows you to download the images to the PC, but this is not acceptable for my purposes.

Therefore, what is the command line syntax to mount the serial device read-only so that I can use "dd" to image the camera media to a raw image file on my PC?

TIA for any help on this.

Hi!

I'm not sure this is possible at all. Had the camera been an USB storage device, then it would have been possible to mount it. But since it uses a (possibly proprietary) serial protocol to communicate with the computer, Linux doesn't know how to "talk" to it.

What you could try, is to see if your camera is supported by the Digital Camera Tool (found under Graphics in Fedora).

Good luck!

Or maybe try using the proprietary software under wine.

Yves.
