Question Dates in PL/PGSQL

Is there a way to compare date in PL/PGSQL I am trying to write a function that will check and see if a record exits in a table with the current date, and if it doesn't add one. I am pretty sure this is possible, but I can't find any documentation concerning dates and PL/PGSQL.

Thanks
