database to store information from txt and xml files
Hello to all contributors,
My system manages xml files. I wish to read the xml files and save information to a database.
I do not want to create the database on the same server, so I am writing the information I gather from the XML to a flat file.
Currently, I use perl and XPATH to parse the XMLs and save the info to a flat file.
What database system should i use, MySQL?
Am i wrong to not want to add a database on the current server? Can i create another instance of MySQL for this purpose without affecting the existing third party MySQL instance?
(Which development technology?) How about accessing the info in the database? How should I create the web interface to access the information?
Looking for direction more than details.
Choice of DB is up to you, but MySQL is usually the default on a lot of distros.
If you're already using MySQL (albeit from a 3rd party), I'd stick with that; less confusing.
You have a couple of choices
a) create the new DB instance on a new system
b) add a new schema to the current DB instance. This won't interfere, so long as you create a new user (ie schema owner) etc for it.
Its useful you're using Perl, because Perl has modules for dealing with almost any DB, including MySQL; been there, done that, got the T-Shirt :)
You could also do the web pages in Perl, although you'll also find a lot of recommendations to use php for that, because a lot of web hosters supply that as std.
Its your choice....
Thank you for the direction, I will research the topic.
