Customizing mouse buttons

I'm running Mandrake 8.2 with a MS Intellimouse Optical (wired). The mouse has five buttons (well, six if you count the wheel that can be depressed). I have the main two and the wheel working fine. I want to define the fourth and fifth buttons (side buttons - i.e. the thumb and pinky buttons). When running Windows I have the side buttons moving back and forward in the browser history. How do I configure the same for my mouse on Linux?

I have seen posts about custom configuring your mouse in various threads but none of them handle this specific issue. Muchas gracias.
