custom kernel (2.6.23) refuses to boot on dell E1505 laptop

Hi,

I want to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.23, but I can't seem to get them to boot. Right now I'm on slackware 12.0 and I'm running the "huge" kernel, as opposed to the generic one. The generic kernel from slackware likewise does not boot and if I try I end up with an kernel panic "cannot open root device sda7 or unknown block(0,0)". The "huge" kernel has all kinds of things build into it. Thus I'm overlooking something crucial when configuring my kernel. But what?

Usually this means that you do now have the driver of the filesystem build into the kernel. But I have! I'm using ext3fs and "CONFIG_EXT3_FS=y" in my kernel config.

These are my hardware specs:

What I recommend doing is copying your previous .config and using that is as your foundation for the new kernel. Then go ahead and build the kernel.
