CUPS gives sporadic "no default destination"

Our application uses "lpr -o raw FILENAME" to print using CUPS. About one or two percent of the time it gives an error, "no default destination available". My guess is that it's a race condition in CUPS, i.e. a bug. Anyone with any info on this?

veiw the contents of /etc/printcap

and make sure it is correct.

lpstat and lpq will let you know the condition of the printer.

Also how long does it take/what are you doing to clear that up?

"/etc/printcap" - The contents of /etc/printcap are perfect; generated by cupsd from /etc/cups/printers.conf.

"lpstat and lpq will let you know the condition of the printer." - nothing tells me the condition of the printer. lpstat gives me the queue status, not the printer status. How can I get printer status? Under MS-DOS, I can tell the user "The printer has a paper jam", "The printer is turned off", etc. Under Linux, I can open /dev/lp0 and do an ioctl but I can't do that when CUPS is running.

"how long does it take/what are you doing to clear it up?" - the operators are not doing anything to clear it up. Reexecute the lpr command and it works OK.

Thanks for your response; it has helped.
