Crontab - have to restart crond after rebooting but scripts works fine thereafter

As per title. I have a simple shell script that displays some info on the desktop of my Slack/Fluxbox machine. I don't think it's distro specific hence asking here.

The script works fine, both from a shell and from crontab itself, but won't run after booting unless I stop and start crond. The stop/start so far I've only done when X has been running and I'm guessing it's something to do with that since the machine only boots to a console login and I start X after logging in.

Any thoughts?

Could it be running but displaying on a tty you don't see? Alt-F1 or similar may show you the other screens.
