Starting with Fedora, you can start removing things to get down to what you want...

It will be easier, however, to build UP. You could start with something like Arch Linux or DSL (Damn small Linux), or you might want to look at Linux from Scratch.

What is the end objective?---eg do you need to conserve disk space?

I can also suggest Gentoo Linux although it doesn't uses RPMs.

You'll have to switch to the "Portage system" which is very good for developing.

Most distributions allow you you choose advanced installation options and choose what you want to install. I have not tried it with Fedora and do not know what sort of base installations they offer.

Are you willing to switch to another distro other than Fedora?

I've made my own packages for Gentoo Linux which I inserted in the package manager (Portage). And as the installation is made "step by step" you can have your own packages installed during the system setup.

I never used LFS but it also looks like a good approach. About ArchLinux and DSL, I'm not sure if they are customizable.

I never used Fedora neither RedHat so I don't know how to do it with FC4.

My only experience with a RPM based distro was with SuSE (some years ago) and never went into developing.

Gentoo is based on Portage and installation is way different from SuSE (and RH, FC I believe).

If you have a spare box/disk/partition and want to try Gentoo then I can give some hints.

If you want to keep using FC then I can't help you much.

So, you decided to give Gentoo a chance.. Good

First let me warn you. As I told you installation is made step by step. So please be patient

When base installation is done you can develop packages the Portage way. Everything is well documented so making a Portage package is not hard.

First I suggest to download Gentoo LiveCD 2006.1 accordingly to your processor architecture.

Then choose one of this handbooks and read it carefully.

Start your Gentoo install and report here any problems or doubts that may arise. Good luck
