Creating my own distrobution

I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on or tips about what i'm trying to do. I'm check out a bunch of resources but with little luck. i checked out the Linux From Scratch project but that just doesn't seam right.

I'm a slackware user and have been from day one, i've used gentoo and others but i guess once you go slack you never go back. so what i'm thinking about doing is taking the 2.6 kernel form kernel.org and grabbing some other necessary parts and making my own distro! but i really have no idea what the steps are to go from kernel to working distro. i guess my goals are to:

1. make it bootable from cd-rom (maybe have fdisk running also)
2. have a kernel booted
3. and get networking or internet access working
4. have the tools to compile applications
5. ?

... more ?

i registered the project with source forge. it will soon be located at
ravenstyles.sourceforge.net i'll make sure to give credit to anyone who helps me out ...and to be really corny who want's to be part of history!!

So by bootable from Cd to you mean you want it to be a Live-CD or you want to installation to come from a bootable CD???

If you want a live CD... I suggest toying around and tweaking Knoppix or Gnoppix to your liking...

If you want to built your own but don't want to go with LFS.. take the distro you like the best... apparently Slack... and remove all the stuff you dont want from the sources.. and add some stuff that you do...

I don't really know how to do this as I have never made my own distro.. but I'm sure there are tons of books and documentation on it...

I've built my own distro before, exclusively for my server. Its a lot easier than it sounds and its a lot of fun.

The most difficult time I had was trying to get ld-gcc-glibc to link correctly and writing the numerous configuration files in /etc. There was also a bug in findutils (I think), which I had edited the source files to get it to compile. The rest can roughly be sumed up as "./configure && make && make install".

I had found this howto very useful in understanding how the GNU/Linux kernel works and the necessary programs needed to get my OS working:
From Power-up to Bash

I can help if you wish, just email me here: rkishore@att.net
