Creating Minimal Linux

I am reasonably new to Linux... Have been using it for 6 months or so, but haven't really done any serious admin type stuff or "power user" stuff.

I am currently using SuSE 10.0. I need to do some testing on an app I wrote and I want to turn off all un-necessary stuff/services/etc. For example... X-Server... don't need it... want to turn it off. I don't need any networking capabilities at all... Basically, I just want the bare minimum I need to make the machine run. How do I proceed? Is there a good site which can tell me what the various services etc. do and how do terminate them on startup?

Thanks,
CD

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
