Create flashable file of *installation on USB* and

Hello,

I would like to put a downloadable version of Ubuntu installation on USB on the net with an easy way to flash it back on. This is different than the persistent LiveUSB option, as it is a direct install with an ext4 file system on USB.

I learned how to make a bit-by-bit copy from some other comments:

sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc bs=8M && sync

(Only works if the secondary memory stick is larger in size)

I am trying to put up a downloadable trial for my development at http://c2linux.net.

This also should be cross-platform (Windows and Linux users, alike).

Does anybody have any suggestions? Maybe it would involve using the dd command again, in Linux, and some t00l in Windows.

Thanks!

Instead of writing to a second flash drive write to a file instead:
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdb of=myImageFile bs=8M
That image file can easily be deployed over the net and written back to a flash device using dd (Linux) or Win32 Disk Imager (Windows).

They make rawritewin and dd for windows too. A long way around it to install tools for unix.

To create it file based you'd need to have a common program or a bootable media.

One could use gpxe/ipxe maybe to set up over the network also.

Normally one puts an iso image on some location. Then one uses tools to place in disk.

In almost all of these you'd have to make generic terms in the usb image.

what i used to do for my xbmc-live pc was re-flash the os using dd (about 1.5 gb) then use gparted to extend the boundary of the partition so i can save movies to it.

before making an image backup of the disk i would use dd to write zeroes to it and so i could bzip2 it to save space.
