check your swap space. are there any error listings during boot-process like
error: swapspace not mounted
hda4 not mounted
or the like? once i had the same prob like you: every app that i wanted to run urged the cpu to load like hell. my prob was that the swap partition hadnīt been recognized properly during installation and wouldnīt be used any further. reinstallation was required as i couldnīt change the settings any more.
I have done a free:
free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 319820 315076 4744 0 58136 177968
-/+ buffers/cache: 78972 240848
Swap: 257000 5876 251124
So IMHO it doesn't seem a swap problem??? I still feel its something with XFS.....
Here's a simple example:
I start fluxbox...
I immediately jump to VT1 and do top
Then I see xfs on 98% CPU for a long time...
And,. flux takes a long time to start. When it's finished, I don't see any XFS in my top...
I may be way off here, but I remember some posts ages ago about xfs running slow and hogging cpu time because "local loopback" was not set up correctly. I just tried google, but cannot find it. Meanwhile, you might just check that ifconfig shows that you have local looppack running.
Besides, me being a dummy didn't even think before posting and realize that xfs (filesystem) wouldn't run as a process to begin with. *smacks forehead*
Does the command fc-cache -v return everything without errors? Or would this even be relevant? As far as the font server and fonts in general go in linux, I'm pretty worthless.

Not sure if this will help you but I experienced some serious slowdown problems when I didn't have my hostname listed in my /etc/hosts. I added it to the 127.0.0.1 entry after localhost (example follows).
