hi there,

check your swap space. are there any error listings during boot-process like

error: swapspace not mounted

hda4 not mounted

or the like? once i had the same prob like you: every app that i wanted to run urged the cpu to load like hell. my prob was that the swap partition hadnīt been recognized properly during installation and wouldnīt be used any further. reinstallation was required as i couldnīt change the settings any more.

think itīs worth a check!

see you,

bavarian

Mmm I don't see any error messages in my boot.log or should I look in another file?

dmesg shows:
Adding Swap: 257000k swap-space (priority -1)

I have done a free:
free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 319820 315076 4744 0 58136 177968
-/+ buffers/cache: 78972 240848
Swap: 257000 5876 251124

So IMHO it doesn't seem a swap problem??? I still feel its something with XFS.....

Here's a simple example:

I start fluxbox...
I immediately jump to VT1 and do top
Then I see xfs on 98% CPU for a long time...
And,. flux takes a long time to start. When it's finished, I don't see any XFS in my top...

Am I on the right track here???

Well, at this point, I'd say to try and use a different filesystem.

xfs is still experimental, no?

mmmm I think we are miscommunicating here... With xfs I mean X-FontServer .....

??? (At least that's what I always assumed....

I may be way off here, but I remember some posts ages ago about xfs running slow and hogging cpu time because "local loopback" was not set up correctly. I just tried google, but cannot find it. Meanwhile, you might just check that ifconfig shows that you have local looppack running.

Sorry, Satch -- Misunderstood indeed!

Besides, me being a dummy didn't even think before posting and realize that xfs (filesystem) wouldn't run as a process to begin with. *smacks forehead*

Does the command fc-cache -v return everything without errors? Or would this even be relevant? As far as the font server and fonts in general go in linux, I'm pretty worthless.

Sorry, was away for a few days, but here's the output of fc-cache -v:

fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 3 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/share/fonts"
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default": skipping, 0 fonts, 2 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript": skipping, 8 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1": caching, 35 fonts, 0 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1"
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/bitmap-fonts": skipping, 32 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/afms": caching, 0 fonts, 1 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/share/fonts/afms"
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/afms/adobe": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/share/fonts/afms/adobe"
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1": skipping, 29 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/OTF": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/OTF"
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF": caching, 65 fonts, 0 dirs
Can't save cache in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"
fc-cache: "/home/mike/.fonts": no such directory, skipping
fc-cache: failed

Indeed it gives errors... (I ran it as a normal user, not as root. Should I ?)

When I run as root it shows:

fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 3 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default": skipping, 0 fonts, 2 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript": skipping, 8 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1": caching, 35 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/bitmap-fonts": skipping, 32 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/afms": caching, 0 fonts, 1 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/afms/adobe": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1": skipping, 29 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/OTF": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF": caching, 65 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/root/.fonts": no such directory, skipping
fc-cache: succeeded

So, could the problem be in the fc-cache thingie? No idea what it does, by the way....???

The loopback is installed OK, it shows up with localhost on 127.0.0.1 so i dont think its that... But thats just my humble opinion...

Thanks for all your input!

Not sure if this will help you but I experienced some serious slowdown problems when I didn't have my hostname listed in my /etc/hosts. I added it to the 127.0.0.1 entry after localhost (example follows).

# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost antik
