could not open default font 'fixed'

OS: Mandriva 2006
So everything was working fine and dandy. I had installed a few programs prior to the problem (Eclipse, NetBeans, and Flash plugin for firefox) then rebooted only to be presented with a nice:

Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

X would not start. So using my mad lynx skillz, i googled the issue and found a recommendation to add the following lines to my xorg.conf

FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"

This got me back into X, and exerything seems to be working fine now. But I desire to know what went wrong. I feel like i did a workaround rather than resolving the problem. Can anyone provide me with some input as to what may be wrong? Thanks

this is presumably down to your X font server, xfs not running.

I actually came across that when I googled the issue, so I tried 'service -f xfs', and the screen showed that the service started fine [ OK ]. startx still failed though. service -s showed and still shows 'xfs (pid 5053) is running...'

Hi,

I had the same exact problem, it drove me crazy for a while until I found a fix. I want to share it just in case someone else will run into the same problem.

My fix is as follow:

yum install libXfont
yum install xorg-x11-xfs
yum install xorg-x11-xfs-utils
yum install xorg-x11-xinit
yum install xorg-x11-xdm

It is possible that one of the package that I installed fixed the problem and not all packages were needed.

I was facing the same issue on RHEL 4.

What I did is that I commented the following entry in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

# RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
# FontPath "unix/:7100"

As per the entry in this config file , fontpath entries are taken care by a independent font server . So , I commented the above entry. Also , we have to make sure xfs is running as it is the font server.

Phew after making the above changes , I am able to use GUI

Thanks
