copying from XTERM session

I have always wondered how one can copy what is on the screen during an XTERM session and paste it to a file. I know how to append using redirection but what I want is to simply be able to highlight the letters with my mouse and then copy and then paste. Sad to say kind of like windows. When you type - run- command and then take your mouse and in the upper left hand corner choose to copy what is on the screen and then paste it where you want. This would really eliminate a lot of typing.I want to know how to do this in windows.

When I'm in an xterm I just highlight the text I need to copy and press enter. This puts it into a clipboard, it should then be ready to paste. So for example you are on www.linuxquestions.org and you are trying to give somebody something that you have copied from xterm, you should be able to Ctrl-v to paste it. Let me know if this doesn't work for you.

On my terminal "enter" does not do it--but right-click>>copy does
