copying a CD to a directory

I've tried cp [cdrom] [destination], cp [individual files] [destination], but both of them returned some errors. What is the correct way to copy the contents of a CD to a directory?

Or, you could do cp -a [cdrom] [destination]. If, however, you wanted the entire CD, you can create an ISO of it using dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso - then you can access the files as if there was a CD present, when there is no CD present! Cool!
