Copy from DVD - Input/Output error
 

Hi,

About 2 months ago I burned some data on a linux machine running Redhat to a DVD. Now I'm trying to get some of the data off. On the disc there are 7 folders, all containing the same type of data (although not duplicates of each other). With all of the folders but one I can copy the data off the DVD without a problem. However, with one of the folders I can't copy any of the files, instead I get the following error:

cp: reading '<file>' : Input/output error

I've also tried copying the files on a PC running Windows XP and again I can copy every folder except one, and when I try and copy a file from that folder I get the following error:

Cannot copy <file>: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Does anyone know what these errors mean and why I'm getting them? Also, is there a way I can get at the data on the DVD (it appears to the correct size on the DVD)? Thanks very much.

It means that there are more errors than the error correction algorithms can correct for. On a DVD, this is usually caused by scratches (even tiny ones, if they follow the track), or excessive fingerprints/smudges/hair/dust on the surface.

You can try gently cleaning the disk with a liquid soap and cool water. Dry with a soft cloth (wiping from the center toward the outer rim, NOT around the disk). Handle the disk only by the edges.

If that doesn't work, you can try a mechanical cleaner/scratch remover. They re-buff the surface, but they can cause more problems then they solve. Use as a last resort.
