1) get a .src.rpm, install and compile an installable binary for your system. You will get the defaults of your distro for install paths.
2) get a .src.rpm, install and edit the .spec fine in /usr/src/<kernel version>/SPECS (the tarball goes in /usr/src/<kernel version>/SOURCES), or wherever Mandrake puts them. Change the installation paths to what you want, then try to compile an installable binary.
Don't be surprised if you have to spend a day or two tweaking the .spec file. If the rpm doesn't install with rpm -i, and if you have an existing version of the rpm already installed, try rpm -U with the new binary.
