Console way to play a sound when gmail email arrives? (no pop)

I would like to run a script every 5 min (no X) and play a sound if new email has arrived. Gmail has a special configuration & I would rather not use pop. Is there any non-X program for that purpose ? (no easy since most of these things are for X designed now).
Thank you if someone knows ?

If you have a way of performing a command on new mail received, you can use a cmdline audio player like aplay to play a sound. Without knowing how you are receiving emails from gmail without pop, I don't have any better suggestions. Could you elaborate on your setup?
