Console screen flickering

I've recently jumped ship from Suse to Gentoo, and am generally coping very well with the upshift in skill required - much because I've spent a couple of years using LQ!

The one and only thing which is driving me insane is some very strange behaviour using the console: Whenever I hit backspace or tab, the whole screen jumps up and down - a sort of flicker! It does not happen with other apps.

I'm sure it not a Gentoo problem - merely a duff configuration of X or perhaps my shell defaults, but I'm not sure where to look?

Sounds like you've got it set to give a visual alert instead of a "beep"

Backspacing when there's nothing to delete and tabbing when there's more than one possible completion will both cause your console to give you an alert, I suspect that's what you're getting
