console: screen does not refresh until I switch back and forth to another VC

I installed slackware 8 on an old 486DX2 with 8 MB RAM and an old video card.

the system boots well, and just before the login prompt, the screen stays like it is... IT seems like he keeps thinking, but actually he isn't...

When I switch to another virtual console with ALT-FX and then back to tty1 the screen gets refreshed.

Practically on every command I need to do this. So when I do for example

$ ls
or
#ps -x

nothing happens until I switch back and forth to another VC.

I suppose this has someting to do with my video memory... IS there any way I can fix this? Maybe flush the memory once in a while? Or something else?

Thanks
Patrick de Pinguin
