Console only Linux, can I set resolution?

Hi Everyone

I am having some fun with Debian and no gui/window manager installed.

When I am under a X or X plus KDE/Gnome etc , it's easy to imagine how the monitor resolution is set. However when I am at the console, is X still running? If I type something, pixels still have to be turned on to display the text but I don't understand what is happening at this low of a level.

is there a way to increase the resolution at the console?

Thanks for reading-Patrick

Yes, there is a way to set the console resolution. Just add the option
Code:
video=1920x1080
(of course adapted to your wanted resolution) to the kernel command-line in your bootloader's configuration.
