Cool

Using SuSE 7.0 with 56K pcmcia card in a laptop, my connection speed appears to be incredibly slow (downloads and page refreshes take an age compared to windoze).
How can I check the connection speed for uploads and downloads.
How can I configure serial port, ttys2, or whatever. (Simple solutions are what I understand best)

1.) make sure that the cable you use (if any) isn;t really long.

2.) in you /etc/ppp/options file stick at the top

mtu 567
mru 246

3.) to alter setserial configurations use the setserial command (it is often ran at start up). the defualts tend to work fine

4.) make sure that hard ware flow control is enabled. with hayes modems the init string AT&K3 should do the trick
check your modem manual for other init options that you might be able to enable to speed things up (such as compression).

Hello
I wonder if this is more to do with the way netscape works. I've just managed to get my Red Hat box working with IPmasquerade, and when surfing from the connected win98 laptop, the pages seem to load at the same speed as directly connected; even while I'm using RH update to download a big file. I've used Star Office to browse on the RH box, and that seemed faster than netscape. Anyone else have opinions???
